Battle of the Books - Middle Schools
March 15, 2007
The Stokes County Schools Battle of the Books competition for middle school students was held on March 15 in the Board Room of the school system's administrative office in Danbury. Three teams representing each of the county's middle schools participated in the activity.
In preparation for the competition, school team members began reading selected books from the "official" Battle of the Books reading list at the beginning of the school year. The contest involved each team, with the help of team members, being able to correctly identify the book and author after being asked questions about the selected books by the Battle of the Books Moderator.
Following 6 rounds of competition, the team from Chestnut Grove Middle School placed first and are now eligible to compete in the regional competition scheduled for March 23. Southeastern Middle School placed second with the Piney Grove team following in third place. Lamp of Learning Medals were presented to the winning team with the second and third place team receiving ribbons.
Members of the winning team are Taylor Bonds, Ashley Gentry, Charlie Hall, Alexis Harold, Thomas Hawkins, Trevor Inman, Kendall Meachum, McKayla Newsome, Dillon Richardson and Jordan Wilson. The team is coached by teacher Julie Sedlacek and assistant coach Emily Gordon.
