Our Chess Club has been mixing things up lately by exploring some wild and exciting chess variants! We've been testing our strategies and bending our brains with 3-player, 4-player, and even 1-D chess. 🤯

But we didn’t stop there... we also took a trip back in time! ⏳ We learned how to play Hnefatafl, an awesome Viking strategy game dating all the way back to around 400 AD. 🛡️⚔️ It was an incredible way to see how strategy games have evolved over the centuries, and a really fun challenge for the club.

In this lab, students focused on:

🍰🎨 Foods 1: Cake Decorating Day! 🎨🍰

Who knew frosting could turn into fine art AND a full arm workout? 💪😂 Our Foods 1 students put their creativity (and patience!) to the test as they learned the basics of cake decorating—and let’s just say, we have some future bakers in the making!

From piping techniques to color design, students practiced skills like:
✔️ Proper icing consistency
✔️ Piping and decorating techniques
✔️ Creativity and presentation
✔️ And… cleaning up a LOT of frosting 😅

Some cakes turned out Pinterest-worthy… others were more “abstract expressionism” 🎨😂—but every student gained hands-on experience and had a great time doing it!

We’re proud of their hard work, teamwork, and willingness to try something new (even when the icing didn’t cooperate!). 👏

🔪🍴 Viking Foods I: Learning Essential Knife Skills 🍴🔪

Students in Foods spent time today learning and practicing one of the most important foundational culinary skills — proper knife techniques. The lesson began with a demonstration covering kitchen safety, correct knife grip, cutting board safety, and how to properly control the knife while preparing food.

After the demonstration, students practiced several basic cutting techniques used in professional and home kitchens, including slicing, dicing, and chopping. Developing strong knife skills not only improves kitchen efficiency but also reduces waste and prevents injuries.

Learning these techniques helps students build confidence while preparing ingredients and reinforces the importance of safety, precision, and organization when working in the kitchen. These hands-on experiences help our Vikings develop practical life skills they can use at home, in future culinary courses, or in careers in the hospitality and food service industry.

We are proud of our Vikings for working hard to master these essential skills and for taking another step toward becoming confident and capable cooks! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳
