The 2025–26 school year began on a high note as Stokes County Schools held its annual Convocation, bringing together educators and staff from across the district for a morning of music, celebration, and inspiration.

This year’s event showcased the power of collaboration, with musical selections performed by the combined bands of North Stokes, South Stokes, and West Stokes High Schools. The joint performance set a tone of unity and pride, reminding everyone of the district’s shared mission to serve students.

Board Chairman Mr. Mike Rogers opened the program with a warm welcome. “We are all rowing this boat in the same direction,” he said, drawing from a lesson he learned from educator Tony George: Together, we can do anything. Rogers reminded staff that “every staff member impacts a life” and thanked the band members for their performance, noting the smiles that fill the room because “this is Stokes County.”

The South Stokes High School JROTC, under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer Jurkiewicz, presented the colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Rogers.

District Teacher of the Year Stephen Morgan reflected on the role of educators as builders—not just of knowledge, but of skills and people. “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful,” he said, sharing wisdom from the workshop: measure twice, cut once, but understand that life doesn’t always go as planned.

Principal of the Year David Durham, a U.S. Army veteran, brought a leadership perspective from his military service. “Mission first—people always,” he reminded the audience. “Focus on the objective, but never forget the humans standing beside you.” He likened educators to being on the front lines, fighting for students’ futures, and praised their commitment to the mission, each other, and the kids.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Rice closed the program by recognizing staff for their years of service, unique career paths, and dedication to Stokes County. He emphasized, “You matter deeply to Stokes County, and thank you for choosing to be with us. Thank you! Rice introduced this year’s theme, Working together, with the tools we need, with the support to achieve, and with the respect we deserve.

With music, heartfelt words, and a shared sense of purpose, the Convocation set the stage for a year of collaboration, innovation, and student success.
